Is Online Counselling Effective?

Online counselling absolutely is effective. The only difference between online counselling and in-person counselling is the live video conferencing. So, if talk therapy is effective, and we know it, then the delivery does not really matter.

If anything, online counselling might be more effective. Here’s why.

Ease of Attendance

Patient compliance is always a big factor when looking at how effective any kind of treatment is. It’s easier to attend an online meeting than it is to drive or walk across town to attend a meeting in person.

Anxiety

Many people who go to counselling are very anxious about going in person and being in the same room with the therapist. An online meeting is not quite as intimate, so it might be more comfortable for someone dreading their sessions.

Time

Online counselling saves time because the patient or client does not require to time to get to and from sessions. This makes compliance more likely and regular attendance more likely.

COVID-19

COVID-19 has required many of us to make many changes including those working in healthcare and the related disciplines. Even medical doctors are seeing patients by video conferencing and only seeing them in person if absolutely necessary.

Do not hesitate to try online counselling. It is every bit as effective as in-person counselling and a whole lot more convenient. The most important part of the counselling equation is a competent therapist and a willing patient or client; the delivery of talk therapy is not what determines how effective the therapy is.
