Does EMDR therapy work with PTSD?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an effective form of psychotherapy developed in the 1980s. Over the years, it has gained momentum due to its proven ability to help those suffering from PTSD.
In this article, we will take a close look at how EMDR helps with PTSD, and who is suitable for treatment.
How does EMDR Therapy Help With PTSD?
The goal of EMDR therapy is to recall and process traumatic memories. EMDR sessions use time, positive associations, and new sensations to re-live these memories and alter our perception of them.
All EMDR sessions are done with a trained therapist. The therapist will direct individuals to recall traumatic memories and events. During this time the therapist will be guiding a patient’s attention using bilateral stimulation, such as directed rapid eye movement.
This stimulation causes neural networks to associate a new feeling or response with the traumatic memory. This is often paired with positive sensations of peace, relaxation, or safety. Over time EMDR lessens the trauma associated with the memory and gives a patient’s neural networks safe and positive associations of the event.
Does EMDR Work for All Cases of PTSD?
The effectiveness of EMDR therapy with PTSD is not universal. For example, it can be difficult to use EMDR therapy at times because people with PTSD are affected to different degrees. Also, the memory or the association of trauma may not be clear, which renders this method ineffective. Therefore, EMDR is often prescribed for those who have a lower severity of trauma and a clear memory of the event.
Because of its proven success, EMDR is worth considering for anyone suffering from PTSD. This approach helps people process traumatic memories emotions that have severely impacted them and gives them a heightened sense of personal strength and a renewed sense of hope.
